A situation that can be awkward at any type of networking event is the few moments of silence that happens right after entering into a group of people that are already talking. I've learned to overcome this by introducing myself to the group and then saying something like "Please carry-on (with the conversation)". Or, I simply just let those few moments pass until the members of the group begin talking again. Then I proceed to join in on the conversation that was already taking place.
