As a relationship-driven professional, you are most likely attending several business events each month. Attending events is a good way to meet new people and to re-connect with other professionals.

The more you interact with others the more you need to be careful that you are conducting yourself in a professional manner at all times. One bad move can tarnish your reputation. Pay attention to details regarding your appearance and demeanor.

Below are nine ways that you could embarrass yourself while attending a networking event:

1. Your clothes are wrinkled, stained, or ripped
2. Your face and teeth have food on them
3. You aggressively sell your services before others get to know you
4. You drink too much alcohol
5. You bring up controversial subjects (i.e. religion, politics, etc.)
6. You are rude and cut people off when they are speaking
7. Your eyes wander during conversations
8. You talk bad about other people
9. You are arrogant and act like you know everything

Don’t let your bad behavior ruin your personal brand.  Put your best foot forward and demonstrate positive behavior in front of others.

For #9 - I agree that can be "dangerous", but then again, it can also be very beneficial.

I think there can be value in bringing up controversial topics. Granted, you'll probably turn off some people, but you also might make a stronger connection and favorable impression with others. It's definitely a mixed bag. I think that one is up to the individual to decide, and most importantly, to always be respectful of others.
