As a result of attending networking events, you will meet many people. The people who you connect with the most will be the ones that you should follow up with to get to know better.
Make sure that you follow-up with a phone call or email within two days of meeting these people. (I usually follow up the next day, however, two days is okay too.) Otherwise, there is a good chance that they won’t remember you. Hopefully, you had a good enough conversation that you are memorable!
Regardless, you need to be proactive and follow-up. Don’t wait for the other person to contact you first because nine or out ten times you won’t hear from the other person. Also, you will show that you are interested in building a relationship if you contact the other person.
It makes me feel good when people reach out to me first. When this happens, I always set up a time to meet because this person is also serious about building a relationship with me.
If you fail to follow-up, then you are potentially missing a good opportunity to add someone to your network. Don’t let your attendance at networking events go to complete waste. While you should be there to be visible and reconnect with people in your network, you still should come away with some new contacts.
It is fun getting to know people so take every opportunity that you can to get acquainted with various individuals. You never know who you will meet and where it can lead you.
