What Can You Learn About Relationship Building from SpongeBob SquarePants?

If you have young kids, then you already know about SpongeBob. My daughter, who is three, is obsessed with the yellow sponge and his friends.  She watches SpongeBob at night, during the day, and in the morning.  She watches this cartoon so much that I am afraid that she will turn into a sea creature. 

As you can imagine, it is hard for my wife and I to escape watching this show.  At first, we couldn’t stand the show, however, it has grown on us so now we don’t mind watching it with our daughter.  It is such a bizarre show that we are now hooked because we want to see what this cast of characters will do next.

For those of you who know about this show, you will appreciate this post. For those of you know don’t know about it, then you may be intrigued or choose not to read any further.  Below is my description of the main characters and what each has shown us about relationship building.

                                  

SpongeBob SquarePants is a yellow sea sponge who lives in a pineapple for a house. He is the main character of the show and is the best crabby patty cook at The Krusty Krab restaurant.  He is so good that he is well known in Bikini Bottom (town they all live in under the sea).  So, SpongeBob has branded himself as a crabby patty expert.  When other creatures want to eat a crabby patty, they only want to eat if it has been cooked by SpongeBob.  Because of his notoriety, he is friendly and gets along well with everyone. SpongeBob has shown us that if you brand yourself around a particular skill, you will be recognized and people will start coming to you.

Patrick is SpongeBob’s best friend and a pink starfish. All that Patrick does is hang around SpongeBob. He is not very intelligent so it is doubtful that he could ever hold a job. However, he does show loyalty and encouragement, most of the time, to SpongeBob because they are best friends. Loyalty and encouragement is very important for building relationships.  Also, Patrick has shown us that if you don’t focus on meeting new people, then you will be too dependent on your friends and will have a difficult time interacting with people outside of your comfort zone.

Squidward is a mean and crabby squid who thinks that he is better than everyone. He works with SpongeBob at The Krusty Krab as the cashier.  Because of his mean spirit, he doesn’t have any friends in Bikini Bottom. If it wasn’t for his visible role in the restaurant, then he probably wouldn’t interact with anyone.  Squidward has shown us that if you are a miserable and negative person that you will not be able to build relationships. People don’t want to be with downers.

Mr. Krabs is the owner of The Krusty Krab and is a red crab.  He can be a selfish individual because all that he cares about is making money. At the same time, he does mentor SpongeBob because he has recognized his skills as a fry cook.  Mr. Krabs has shown us that seeing the good in others is a wonderful trait for relationship building.  However, if you are too selfish, then your goodness may get overshadowed.

Sandy Cheeks is a squirrel that lives under the sea in an oxygen filled dome. She is a dare-devil and is always up for a challenge. In fact, she and SpongeBob are sparring buddies because the yellow sponge also likes to take risks.  They both trust each other even though they may get into some fairly wide adventures.  Sandy has shown us that when people trust each other you form a strong bond that is hard to be broken.

Mr. Plankton is little twerp (not sure what he is) who is pure evil.  In addition, he is Mr. Krabs' arch-rival and owner of a competitor restaurant, The Chum Bucket. He is always trying to steal the secret crabby patty formula so he can take customers away from The Krusty Krab.  Because of his evil-doer ways, he doesn’t have any friends and can’t be trusted. In fact, his wife is a computer and she is always playing jokes on him.  Mr. Plankton has shown us that if you are untrustworthy, then people will notice this and not want anything to do with you. Don’t be a Mr. Plankton!

Gary is a slimy snail who sounds like a cat and is SpongeBob’s pet. While he can’t move very fast, he is still loyal to SpongeBob.  Gary is always there for him and lends an ear and two large eyes when talking with SpongeBob. Like Patrick, Gary has shown us that loyalty will make or break any relationship.  In addition, Gary has shown us that it is important to have good communications skills so you come across as respectful and caring.
