You should be honored when your contacts introduce you to other people. It shows that they took the time to think about you and want you to succeed. You must be doing something right if you are remembered. Most of us know a lot of people so it can be a challenge to stand out in your network’s mind.
So, when you are remembered, make sure to acknowledge it with praise and reciprocity. Whenever someone makes an introduction, it is important that you follow-up and talk to this person, whether it is via email, phone, or in person. Don’t ignore introductions. It is not professional and will cast you in a negative light.
From time to time, we all get referrals that we would rather not receive, however, you need to have common courtesy and respond. If you don’t respond, then your contacts may not make any future introductions.
In addition, even if a referral is not of interest, you never know who he/she knows so take every introduction seriously. Once a connection is made, it is good practice to let the introducer to know that you made contact and what happened. It feels good to know the outcomes of introductions.
