When meeting people for the first time at an event, it may be difficult for you to find subjects to talk about. For some of you, talking to new people is not a problem. For others, it can be intimidating. Below are some questions that you can have in your toolkit in case you need help starting and continuing a conversation. By asking questions, you are showing that you are interested in the conversation, which is important for relationship building. Your questions should be both business and personal oriented.
- What brings you to this event?
- Do you know the organizer of the event?
- What kind of work do you do?
- What does your company do?
- Who is your idea prospect?
- What is your typical work day like?
- Who would you like to meet?
- How can I help you?
- Where did you grow up?
- What good business books have you read recently?
- Have you traveled anywhere fun recently?
- Do you have any trips planned?
- Do you have kids?
- Are you involved in any charities?
- Have you seen any good movies lately?

Great questions that show an interest in the other person as a person! Another good question that could go along with "who is your ideal prospect" is "what other types of businesses serve the same target market you do?" If you can make a connection for someone to a complimentary business, you could potentially provide them a steady stream of referrals instead of just one.
