When you ask people for a referral, make sure that your request is not only one sided. In fact, ask the other people who they would like referred to them. By doing so, you are demonstrating that this is not a one sided relationship. Helping others is a great way to strengthen your existing network as well. You should always be thinking of ways to connect with people in your network. Making introductions is not only a great way to stay top of mind, but also a great way to stay connected to your network.
On the flip side, if someone asks you for a referral first, then let him/her know who you are looking to meet as well (if not asked). If the other person is not able to introduce you to your desired person, then that is okay. Not everyone will be able to reciprocate. As long people think about it and know who you want to meet for the future, you are in a better position than before. You will be surprised from time to time when people make out of the blue introductions. It is nice to be remembered.
Take relationships serious and always find ways to help each other. Both sides should be active in the process. If you keep doing this with each new person that you meet, then you will have built a sustainable and long term network.
