When attending networking events, you will meet a lot of people, some of which will be integrated into your network. If you can walk away with 1-2 new contacts at each event you attene first conversation. Below are 2 sure-fire ways to know that you will walk away with a new contact.
Focus on the other person – During your conversation, let the other person talk so you can get to know this person. As you get to know this person, you will start to understand what synergies exist so you can determine if it worth building the relationship beyond your first conversation. Either way, this person will feel appreciated and will want to get to know you too, which can happen after the event.
Find ways to help – As you get to know someone, find out how you can best help this person. You may want to make a referral, share some information, or help with a project. Whatever way you decide to help, follow-up with be necessary after your first conversation. By offering to help, this person will want to get to know you better too.
