You are not expected to follow-up with everyone that you meet. Generally, you know who you want to continue talking with after the event. These are the people who you felt a connection with through a similarity, comfort level, or an actionable item.
Don’t wait too long to follow-up with people. It is suggested that you reach out to people 1-2 days after an event. That way, you are still top of mind and it shows that you took the potential new relationship serious.
When you follow-up (whether via phone or email) make sure to mention something about your conversation. By doing so, it will not only help to keep your conversation flowing, but also show that you paid attention to your original discussion.
In addition, if you said that you were going to do something, then this is a great reason to follow-up. At the same time, follow through is a key to building a trusting relationship. If you don’t follow through, then your reputation could be damaged.
Be proactive if you want to build a relationship. Most people don’t follow-up or follow through. So, set yourself apart.
