We have all heard of the stories of "live in the moment" teens who post controversial pictures or information to their profile on sites such as MySpace and Facebook. Most teens don't think of the consequences of what they post. The web creates a digital footprint that will always be there.
While online networking is a great tool for keeping in touch with others, you need to use it properly. Before a teen is admitted into college or starts a career, someone will be searching online to find out more. In fact, teens may have problems when they get older because of what they posted online.
According to a recent study, "more than 1 out of every 10 teenagers has posted a nude or seminude picture of themselves or others online." This is scary and should be taken serious. While I don't advocate that teens should be micromanaged by their parents, they do, however, need to learn what is appropriate usage of online networking sites as well as the consequences.
Here are some more numbers from the same study:
- 51% of teens who check their sites more than once a day.
- 22% who check their sites more than 10 times a day.
- 39% who have posted something they later regretted.
- 37% who have used the sites to make fun of other students.
- 25% who have created a profile with a false identity.
- 24% who have hacked into someone else's social networking account.
- 13% who have posted nude or seminude pictures or videos of themselves or others online.

Because so many teenagers are completely unaware of the dangers, they walk right into the trap. The only way for realisation to occur is for the worst to happen to them personally, or a friend.
