Networking is an activity that should be done all of the time. You should be building relationships so you can reach out to people when you need help. Below are 7 thoughts on networking during these challenging times.
- Networking should not be used to only find a job. Build relationships for the long term so when you need help in the future, you have an established network to call upon.
- Attend a variety of events to meet diverse individuals. You never know who you are going to meet so attend new events from time to time.
- Get involved with a networking group or non-profit. By volunteering, you will meet people who are connected and will be able to build good relationships with them because you will be working together.
- Reach out to your old contacts to update each other on your lives. It is better late than never to reestablish prior relationships. LinkedIn and Facebook are great tools to find these people if you don’t have their contact information.
- Leverage networking tools such as LinkedIn to get connected to people or firms that interest you. LinkedIn is a great tool to help you find a job or prospective clients.
- Always act and dress very professional. With a lot of people out of work and budgets tight, make sure that you keep your demeanor at a high standard. You have a lot of competition out there.
- Follow through and follow up with people. When you say you will do something, make sure that you fulfill your promise. When you meet someone for the first time who you connect with, make the first effort and follow up within two days.
