It goes without saying that you should be truthful to get the respect you deserve from others. However, this is not always the case with people. As we measure ourselves to the success of our peers, jealously can set in if we aren’t doing as well.
You need to realize that you are successful in your own right. Who cares how well your peers are doing. As long as you are performing at your own success level, that is all that matters.
With this said, do not lie or embellish the truth to other people about your success or what you do. Once you start lying, you may not be able to stop. The problem with lying, other than it being wrong, is that you will eventually be caught.
We have witnessed countless examples from executives at Enron, MCI Worldcom, and Andersen. As you know, these firms are no longer around anymore and many of these executives are serving jail time.
Business circles are small so always tell the truth and treat people how you want to be treated. Once your reputation becomes tarnished as a liar, people will not want to do business with you. In fact, you will have a very difficult time building your network.
