Most people don’t have a plan on who they want to meet prior to attending a networking event. Part of the reason for this is because we are so overwhelmed in our everyday lives that we don’t spend the time researching an event. Another reason is that we look forward to seeing who we meet on a random basis.
I am guilty of the second reason, which can work. However, I don’t always come away with meeting the people who I should meet. Therefore, as much as you can beforehand, research an event/organization so you know who will be there.
While it may not be possible to get names of attendees beforehand, you should be able to find out what types of people will be in attendance. Much of this information can be found on the host’s Website as well as picking up the phone and calling the organizer. In fact, explain to the organizer who you would like to meet and ask to be introduced to some of these people at the event. At the same time, contact past attendees (if you know any) and ask about the types of attendees.
With the above strategies in place, your chances will be greater than most to meet the right people. Wouldn’t you like to maximize your time while attending events?
You may think that you are wasting your time at some events because you didn’t come away with any good contacts. I wouldn’t go as far to say that it was a waste of time because you still need to interact with people and been seen on a regular basis in your community. However, I am sure that you would like to come away with quality contacts each time.
Put together a networking strategy prior to attending events. You will feel better about spending your time after hours because you will have a better chance of coming away with good contacts.
