Yesterday, I had the privilege of watching a Chicago Cubs game from a sky box at Wrigley Field. The game lasted 15 innings and unfortunately the Cubs didn't win. However, I had an excellent opportunity to build some relationships throughout the night.
I was invited by a banker who I have gotten to know over the last couple of years. It was his company's sky box. He has also invited me to golf with him for a company outing. One thing that bankers understand (at least the good ones) is that it is all about building relationships. Why do you think they are called "relationship managers"?
Anyways, my friend gets it. He told me that he works hard at building relationships by staying active and getting involved in the community. With his passion for getting to know people, he has become a successful banker.
We talked about how it is so important to get to know people. We both understand that with relationships comes success as long as you nurture them. In order to maintain some of his relationships, he spends time with clients or partners by golfing, attending sporting events, playing poker, etc.
You need to be proactive to make your relationships work. Be creative and find ways to connect. The business will come when the time is right.
